Kola River Report, July 20-26 2008

Additional Pictures

Hi all,
Now we are back from our Kola River adventure on the LaxA Camp.
It was a fantastic week with the best results ever for me and also for my friends and the other guests.
Total no. of anglers this week; 6 people ONLY, those who missed this week will regret it for a long time !!
We started out on Saturday with some fishing on Home Pool and  some of us got 3 salmon and the
others one or two and fish was lost as well. Water temperature was apx. 17 deg.C. Air 18-19.
On Sunday my friend Rafal from Poland and I went on Bear Beat ( the upper beat ) in bright sunshine
and 25 deg.C, water temperature rose to more than 18-19 deg.C and the fishing was a little slow.
Anyway we got our fish during the day on very small size 14 flies, light-light  dressed.
Monday the weather was more like fishing weather with clouds, but still warm, temperature stabilized
on 18 deg.C and we got a handful of salmon and grilse during the day. We fished from Bridge Pool,
3-Rock Pool, Plate and down to Home Pool and again some nice fish in Home Pool after dinner.
Tuesday we fished Junction, Serious Pool and Pump and things moved faster, with plenty of salmon
in the net and lots of strikes and lost fish. The weather was similar to Monday, but thunder was building
up and a weather change was approaching ( acc. to weather report from one of our friends by SMS ).
Water temperature started to decrease from 18 deg.C and at the end of the day we measured 16-17 deg.C.
Wednesday  we was on Monica, upper and lower, and down to "Last Chance" at the bridge
(pick up place) the rain and thunder kicked in after 12 O´clock and from then on, fishing was as good as
it ever gets on a salmon river.

Half Week Score and info.; Air Temp. 20 deg.C / Water Temp 17 deg.C and slowly rising water level.
Tom Ziegler; 8 fish.
Jackie Mansson; 15 fish.
Soren Moller; 13 fish / Top fish 28 lb.
Allan Bech; 17 fish / Top fish 26 lb.
Rafal Kaminsky; 20 fish / Top fish 25 lb.
Lars Terkildsen; 24 fish.
Total; 97 fish.

Thursday the temperature had dropped to 15 deg.C and we fished Junction, Serious Pool, Pump and Loparsky 1.
I got an idea for a new fly Wednesday and had made some for Thursdays fishing ;
The Cascade Machine, a combination of The Cascade and The Green Machine. A new killer was born.
On the small left side fork, upper sit Serious Pool, it produced 6 fish and my guide suggested to name
this place; Cascade Machine Pool.
From this moment everybody wanted this fly and I produced what I could for the guys and all had
excellent results on it for the rest of the week. Some of the guides called it "The secret Fly"
others Cascade Machine, the fact was it worked excellent, without comparison.

Thursday evening and night, until 3.30, I fished Home Pool. I started from where the hard the hard
current goes into the wider part of Home Pool, from the upper sit bank of the camp.
This was an amazing night with 14 fish and will go into my memory as one of the best salmon
fishing moment of my life.
Friday; water temperature had continued to drop down to 14 deg.C and level to rise,
but slowly,  we fished Monica, upper and lower, down to "Last Chance" and finished up at
the upper Net neck. Results was again excellent and we fished the Cascade Machine in size 8, 10 and 12.
In Lower Monica, after the bend, I took one nice fish after another. It was high water
compared to normal summer level, and the fish took mostly on the inner edge of the current,
as it should be in high water.
All the way down to the end of the island I had contact with fish and in the last "mirror"
at the end of the island two nice grilse got into the net. Who could ask for more?
I should be more challenge in ones fishing, it got almost to easy.
During this series of fish my guide told me that the old camp record of 63 fish to one angler, in a week, was broken.
So proud I am!
After loosing my last one of the Cascade Machine down in Net Pool, I used a Cascade like fly
with all black body and tied with pale colored materials for the tale and front hackle on a size 10 hook,
and got a nice salmon just before we had to go back to the camp.
On Saturday 4 of us had the chance to buy on another day on site, since we had to wait to
fly back to Sunday morning 7 AM.
Total score should be considered in the light of this. Soren and Allan did not fish this day.
During the week all of us did lose a lot of fish just as it happened for the anglers in the previous weeks.
I guess it is normal even at the Kola River.

Final Score of the week and info.;
Air Temp. 12 deg.C / Water Temp 13-14 deg.C and medium high water level.
Tom Ziegler; 21 fish / Top fish 25 lb.
Jackie Mansson; 27 fish Top fish 25 lb.
Soren Moller; 17 fish / Top fish 28 lb.
Allan Bech; 29 fish / Top fish 26 lb.
Rafal Kaminsky; 55 fish / Top fish 25 lb.
Lars Terkildsen; 80 fish. Top fish 18 lb.
