Carlogie is the upper of the three Ballogie Estate beats. Central is Ballogie itself and the lower is Commonty.

Situated amidst forestry and farming land, this is a beautiful, versatile beat on the right bank of the river. Predominantly secluded with 3 huts.

The main hut at the famous Calm Pool is a popular lunchtime rendezvous for all beat rods with cooking facilities and wood-burning stove.

Carlogie is a renowned streamy, classic fly water, which fishes well at all heights but particularly at low levels when it excels. The 16 named pools give a fine variety of challenge or ease to satisfy all techniques and tastes. Vehicular access is available to all pools, otherwise short walks via pleasant river paths are available. Wading is most easy and seeking depth is not a priority to reach lies. As well as salmon there is good sea-trout fishing from early summer throughout the beat. Like the other Ballogie Estate beats, Carlogie is a naturalist’s paradise with a wide diversity of flora and fauna. On the opposite bank lie the Dess and Kincardine beats.

Ballogie;

The 5 huts have no toilets or electricity and 4 have heating. The Gannets hut has a portaloo.

DESCRIPTION:
Ballogie is the middle of the three Ballogie Estate beats. Above lies Carlogie and below Commonty, all on the right bank of the river. Like Carlogie, Ballogie is attractively located in forest and farmland. Ballogie caters for all tastes from streamy pools at the Upper, Middle and Lower Gannets, Flats and Kelpie to the deeper waters of the Sand, Slips, Boat and Potarch Bridge pools. The latter is close to the Potarch Hut, a popular lunchtime meeting place with wood burning stove capable of boiling water and heating snacks. Potarch Hotel is also an extremely popular rendezvous for fishermen.

Wading can be easy, not necessary or with some caution, depending on river heights, it is classic fly water with good movement and easy access to all pools. There are two main huts attractively located and families will enjoy the secluded, picturesque location with the diversity of flora and fauna.

Ballogie is divided into four beats fished in rotation which gives a rich variety and varied challenge.

Commonty;

LOCATION:
The lowest of the three Ballogie beats, the Commonty ownership is shared with Finzean Estate although bookings and arrangements are carried out as with Carlogie and Ballogie.

DESCRIPTION:
Commonty is a secluded and extremely attractive beat. Access is gained by a forest road which descends through coniferous woodland to the river. the pools are of extremely varied character which enables fishing at all hights. The main pool, the Garden, is an angler´s delight and versatile to most discerning fisher. Suicide, the top pool, as the name suggests has difficult wading with good reward while the Chair, Loop, Bend and Points are productive pools with their own attractive characteristics. In all Commonty is a lovely beat of great variety where pace and quiet is an added bonus. like all Ballogie beats, the flora and fauna is one of the main bonuses, with roe deer and otters common sights.

Fishing is from the right (south) bank of the river Dee 1.5 miles from Ballogie beat down to Upper Blackhall, opposite Sluie and Woodend beats.

There are two main huts, with one secondary, and vehicular access is available to all pools except Suicide, Loop, Bend and Point where short walks by the river are necessary. One of the huts has a gas cooker for heating water and snacks and toilet facilities.

Upper Blackhall;

LOCATION:
Upper Blackhall is situated 3 miles west of Banchory on the south bank of the Dee.

DESCRIPTION:
The beat fishes 3 rods and has 15 named pools and it fishes equally well in low and high water. There are 2 fishing huts with wood burning stoves and 2 shelters.

All but 3 of the pools are accessible by car from the riverside track. There is a full time ghillie, Raymond Sinclair, who has looked after the beat for 12 years.

He is a fine fisherman, a patient and experienced teacher and takes enormous trouble to look after his fishermen.

Apart from its productive water, the attraction of the beat is its beauty and tranquillity. Beautiful trees, prolific wildlife and an absence of public roads make for perfect peace.

Accommodation;

6 of us will stay at The Upper Blackhall estate´s  Stables, which are some 1.5 miles from the Upper Blackhall beat on private road. The house has 4 twin bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, WC, sitting room, kitchen/dining room, rod/drying room. It is fully furnished and equipped.

3 of us will stay at The Ballogie estate´s Ford Cottage. It is a delightful single storey cottage set on the banks of the magnificent River Dee - located off the beaten track beside an historic ford. This cosy cottage, in splendid and tranquil settings, is ideal for both fishermen and country lovers.

In olden times the river was forded here to allow access to one of the oldest villages on Deeside. Kincardine O'Neil can still be seen just across the water.
